ABSTRACT

Objective@#To explore the expression of amphiregulin (AREG) in nasal polyps patients with different degrees of eosinophil infiltration, and to analyze the correlation between AREG and tissue remodeling.@*Methods@#Forty-eight patients underwent endoscopic sinus surgery in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Remin Hospital, Wuhan University from July 2017 to August 2018 were recruited, including 40 males and 8 females, aged from 16 to 60 years old. The subjects were divided into three groups: control group (n=14), eosinophilic chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps (ECRSwNP) group (n=19) and noneosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (non-ECRSwNP) group (n=15). The relative expression of AREG in nasal mucosa was detected by Western blot assay and immunohistochemical staining. Tissue remodeling was detected by HE staining, AB-PAS staining and Masson staining. Kruskal-Wallis test was used for comparison among multiple groups, and Spearman correlation analysis was conducted between the expression level of AREG and the related indexes of tissue remodeling.@*Results@#The expression of AREG in ECRSwNP group was significantly higher than that in non-ECRSwNP group and control group (median protein expression of Western blot was 1.592 vs 0.617 vs0.582, all P<0.05). The degree of epithelial injury and goblet cell metaplasia in ECRSwNP group was significantly higher than that in control group (all P<0.05), the percentage of collagen fibrosis area in ECRSwNP group was significantly lower than that in control group (P=0.01). In chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) patients, the area of mucous glands was negatively correlated with the expression of AREG (r=-0.616, P<0.05), and the percentage of collagen fibrosis area was negatively correlated with the expression of AREG (r=-0.738, P<0.05).@*Conclusion@#The expression of AREG is higher in ECRSwNP patients, which is related to the process of tissue remodeling.

ABSTRACT

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a global health problem that causes major illnesses and disabilities worldwide. Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated that the prevalence of AR has increased progressively over the last few decades in more developed countries and currently affects up to 40% of the population worldwide. Likewise, a rising trend of AR has also been observed over the last 2–3 decades in developing countries including China, with the prevalence of AR varying widely in these countries. A survey of self-reported AR over a 6-year period in the general Chinese adult population reported that the standardized prevalence of adult AR increased from 11.1% in 2005 to 17.6% in 2011. An increasing number of original articles and imporclinical trials on the epidemiology, pathophysiologic mechanisms, diagnosis, management and comorbidities of AR in Chinese subjects have been published in international peer-reviewed journals over the past 2 decades, and substantially added to our understanding of this disease as a global problem. Although guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of AR in Chinese subjects have also been published, they have not been translated into English and therefore not generally accessible for reference to non-Chinese speaking international medical communities. Moreover, methods for the diagnosis and treatment of AR in China have not been standardized entirely and some patients are still treated according to regional preferences. Thus, the present guidelines have been developed by the Chinese Society of Allergy to be accessible to both national and international medical communities involved in the management of AR patients. These guidelines have been prepared in line with existing international guidelines to provide evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and management of AR in China.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To study the expression and significance of Notch1-Jagged1 in nasal mucosa of allergic rhinitis (AR) mouse model in various stages and in the serum of AR patients.@*Methods@#Thirty-six mice were divided into 3 groups: control group, basal sensitization group (OVA) and OVA/AR group, with 12 mice in each group. Allergic symptom in each group were scored after AR model establishment. HE staining method was used to observe the nasal mucosa eosinophils infiltration. ELISA was used to detect the serum level of total IgE. Flow cytometry was used to detect the change of Treg cells in each group. Western blot was used to detect the expression of Notch1 and Jagged1 in nasal mucosa. Flow cytometric bead array (CBA) was used to detect the level of Th1/Th2/Th17 cytokines in splenic lymphocytes. The serum was obtained from 50 patients with AR and 30 control volunteers in Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University from June to October 2017. ELISA was used to detect the expression of Notch1 and Jagged1.@*Results@#Compared with the control group, the allergy symptom, the number of nasal mucosal eosinophils and the level of total IgE were not significantly different in basal sensitization group, but increased significantly in OVA/AR group (6.11±0.78 vs 0.67±0.50, 77.67±5.61 vs 10.33±0.82, (106.80±11.91) pg/ml vs (82.45±19.80) pg/ml, t value was 19.471, 34.848, 2.542, respectively, all P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the ratio of Treg cell increased in basal sensitization group but decreased in OVA/AR group ((10.29±0.47)% vs (9.28±0.16)%, (8.49±0.15)% vs (9.28±0.16)%, t value was 5.838, 4.540, respectively, all P<0.01). Compared with control group, the expression of Notch1 increased significantly both in basal sensitization group and OVA/AR group (1.04±0.05 vs 0.71±0.05, 1.83±0.10 vs 0.71±0.05, t value was 9.293, 31.363, respectively, all P<0.01); and the expression of Jagged1 only increased significantly in OVA/AR group (0.41±0.04 vs 0.21±0.01, t=13.472, P<0.01). It was found that Notch1 was positively correlated with the level of IL-6, IL-10 by Pearson test (r value was 0.98, 0.87, respectively, all P<0.01). Compared with control volunteers, the expression of Notch1 and Jagged1 increased significantly in AR group patients ((1 135.0±254.9) pg/ml vs (436.0±139.3) pg/ml, (1 200.2±401.0) pg/ml vs (559.9±124.2) pg/ml, t value was 13.99, 11.94, respectively, all P<0.01).@*Conclusions@#The expression of Notch1 receptor and ligand increased significantly in the pathogenesis of AR. Notch1-Jagged1 may promote the occurrence and development of AR by up-regulating the expression of IL-6 and IL-10.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#Acoustic pharyngealmetry technology is utilized to evaluate the change and clinical significance of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) patients caused by non-upper airway structural factor and normal individuals′ PWF(pharyngeal wall floppiness).@*Methods@#Acoustic pharyngealmetry instrument of Ecconvision was utilized to examine 102 OSAHS patients and 50 normal individuals, separately recorded their volume of pharyngeal cavity in sit or supine position, calculated PWF in sit or supine position, and SPSS 12.0 of tware was used to analyze data.@*Results@#PWF was 0.14±0.09 in sit position and PWF was 0.21±0.10, (t=5.96, t=9.63, P<0.001)in supine position of OSAHS group, which were all significantly higher than those of control group. PWFs in supine position of OSAHS group and control group were evidently higher than PWF(t=-11.91, P<0.001; t=-2.32, P=0.025) in sit position. ΔPWF(PWF_supine-PWF_sit)was 0.063±0.054 in OSAHS group which was significantly greater than in control(F=41.173, P<0.01). PWF in sit position and supine position were all positively related with age(r=0.714, r=0.735, P<0.001)while irrelevant with BMI(P>0.05).@*Conclusions@#PWF can be utilized to be an index to reflect the physiological feature of upper airway. PWF can more precisely reflect upper airway collapsibility of OSAHS patients on the condition of PWF in supine position. Pharyngeal wall floppiness quantified as a high PWF index is a non-structure vital factor of OSAHS patients and plays a role of guiding us to make personal treatment plans for OSAHS patients.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Maternal influences contribute to the origin of allergic diseases, but the mechanisms are not clear. The current literature prompted the role of epigenetics in the development of allergic diseases. We sought to investigate the roles of regulatory T (Treg) cells and Forkhead box p3 (Foxp3) DNA methylation in the process of maternal transmission of allergic rhinitis (AR) susceptibility. METHODS: BALB/c female mice (AR mother) were sensitized by intraperitoneal injection of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p) 1 on day 1 and 7. Then they mated with normal male mice on day 8. From day 21 to 28, the female mice were intranasal challenged with Der p 1 continuously. The normal controls were given with normal saline in the same way. On postnatal day 3, Female mice and their offspring were sacrificed to detect their histopathology in nasal mucosae, cytokines in sera of mother and spleen homogenates of offspring, Treg cells count, Foxp3 mRNA expressions, and Foxp3 DNA methylation levels in spleens. RESULTS: Compared with the normal controls, neonatal offspring of Der p 1-stimulated female mice (AR offspring) showed the elevation of interleukin (IL)-4 (P<0.01) and IL-17 (P<0.01), the submission of IL-10 (P<0.01) in spleen homogenates. Further, Treg cells count in AR offspring decreased remarkably compared with the normal offspring (P<0.01). Though the difference of Foxp3 DNA methylation level between AR offspring and normal control offspring was not obvious, correlation analysis demonstrated that there was significantly positive correlation between Foxp3 DNA methylation level of mother and that of offspring (r=0.803, P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Under the influence of Maternal AR, their neonatal offspring develop into T-helper type 2 (Th2) dominant immune state, which is closely associated with the recession of Treg cells. Foxp3 DNA methylation may be a mechanism responsible for that maternal effect but still need more studies to ensure.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the efficacy of individualized subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) in allergic rhinitis(AR) maintain phase.@*METHOD@#Compare nasal symptom scores (VAS) and special disease scale--nasal conjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire(RQLQ) score after 3 years treatment to evaluate the therapeutic effect of each group and the level of improving patients quality of life. Take patients' blood to detect the serum level of IL-10 by enzyme linked immunosorbent test (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay).@*RESULT@#After 3 years treatment, there was no difference of VAS between the conventional SCIT group and the individualized SCIT group. ELISA results showed that the level of IL-10 was significantly higher in the drug symptomatic treatment group than that in the healthy group, the levels of IL-10 were significantly lower in the conventional SCIT group and the individualized SCIT group than that in the healthy group, but there was no difference between the conventional SCIT and the individualized SCIT group.@*CONCLUSION@#After 3 years treatment, there was no difference between conventional and individualized SCIT groups. But the efficacy of the conventional and individualized SCIT groups were significantly better than that in the drug symptomatic treatment group.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To study the effect of hypertonic seawater and isotonic seawater for nasal mucosa of allergic rhinitis mice model, and explore the possible mechanism of nasal irrigation with seawater in treatment of allergic rhinitis.@*METHOD@#We used Der pl to make allergic rhinitis model of BALB/c mice, and divided them into three groups randomly. Nasal irrigation with hypertonic seawater (HS) or isotonic seawater (IS) in the treatment group 1-14 days after modeling, and black control (BC) group was given no treatment after modeling. Normal control (NC) group was given no treatment, the number of rubs and sneezings in each group were counted in 30 min after the last nasal irrigation. Mice were then killed 24 h after the last therapy. The noses of mice from each group were removed and fixed, then the slices were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, the others were observed by transmission electron microscope.@*RESULT@#Mice with hypertonic seawater and isotonic seawater were significantly improved in rubs and sneezings compared to the black control group (P 0. 05); Ciliated columnar epithelium cells in mucosal tissues of HS group and IS group were arranged trimly, better than that in the black control group. Morphology and microstructure in nasal mucosal of HS group was closer to the normal group than in IS group.@*CONCLUSION@#The injury of nasal mucosa ciliated epithelium was significantly improved by nasal irrigation with hypertonic seawater and isotonic seawater, and the former is better than the latter, the mechanism of nasal irrigation with seawater in treatment of allergic rhinitis may rely on repairing the injured nasal mucosa ciliated epithelium, thereby the symptoms of nasal was reduced.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To summarize the clinical features of epistaxis in the posterior fornix of inferior meatus and its comprehensive treatment measures.@*METHOD@#We collected and retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 212 cases of epistaxis hospitalized in our department, among which 23 cases were diagnosed as epistaxis in the posterior fornix of inferior meatus. They underwent nasal endoscopic exploration and coagulation surgery with one case under general anesthesia and the other 22 under local anesthesia. The bleeding from olfactory cleft, spheno-ethmoidal recess and the middle nasal meatus were excluded for all the patients during the surgery. After shifting the inferior turbinate inward by fracture, the active bleeding was found in the posterior fornix of inferior meatus, which was stopped immediately by bipolar coagulation. The areas of coagulation and nasal mucosa erosion were packed with nasopore after operation.@*RESULT@#For all the patients, bleeding spots were definitely located during the operation and successfully coagulated. None of them suffered from recurrent-bleeding within 1 week postoperatively. Followed up for 6 to 12 months, there was no epstaxis recurrence or nasal cavity adhesion at the bled side in all patients.@*CONCLUSION@#For intractable epistaxis patient, after excluding the bleeding in olfactory cleft, sphenoethmoidal recess and the middle nasal meatus, it should be considered that the bleeding might come from posterior fornix of inferior meatus. It is the key point to thoroughly expose the posterior fornix of inferior meatus by shifting the inferior turbinate inward by fracture and explore for the bleeding spot carefully.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the changes and significance of the hyaluronic acid (HA) and collagen in the larynx of old guinea pig.Methods Six young guinea pigs (4 months old) and 6 old guinea pigs (2 years old) were selected as control group and aged group for this study (n=6 for each)The expressions of HA and collagen in the larynx of guinea pigs were detected using Alcian blue and Masson trichrome methods,respectively.The images were managed using Image-Pro Plus 6.0 For Window.Results The optical density (expression level) of HA in the larynx was lower in aged group than in control group (0.69 vs.0.80,F=13.45,P<0.05).The optical density(expression level) of collagen in the larynx was higher in aged group than in control group (0.71 vs.0.63,F=9.56,P<0.05).Conclusions The content of HA in larynx is decreased and collagen in larynx is increased in old guinea pig which may result in presbyphonia change through higher viscoelastic properties of vocal cords.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the role of sinomenine in treatment of allergic rhinitis mice model and its possible mechanism.@*METHOD@#We used ovalbumin (OVA) to make allergic rhinitis model of BALB/c mice. Saline was used in the control group. When we challenged the mice with OVA intranasally, the mice in sinomenine treatment group were feed by the food containing sinomenine. Mice were then killed 24 h after the last OVA challenge. The noses of mice from each group were removed en bloc and fixed, then each section was stained with hematoxylin and eosin. ELISA assay was used to measure the concentration of anti-OVA IgE, IL-4 and IFN-gamma. The proteins expressive level of T-bet and GATA3 were examined.@*RESULT@#Nasal mucosa of the mice in sinomenine treatment group were not hyperplasia and without obvious infiltration of eosinophils. The concentration of anti-OVA IgE, IL-4 and IFN-gamma in the serum and T-bet and GATA3 expression levels of sinomenine treatment group were lower than those of allergic rhinitis group.@*CONCLUSION@#The sinomenine can be used to treat allergic rhinitis mice, and the mechanism may rely on the improvements of the Th1/Th2 imbalance.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To review our experience with the use of the CO2 laser combined with pingyangmycin in the treatment of pharyngeal and laryngeal hemangioma.@*METHOD@#A retrospective review of 18 patients with pharyngeal and laryngeal hemangioma treated with CO2 laser combined with pingyangmycin was carried out in our hospital: patients medical charts were evaluated for factors such as age, sex, location of hemangioma, number of laser procedures performed, and postoperative results, including short and long term complications.@*RESULT@#All the 18 patients were underwent operation without any complications such as pharyngeal and laryngeal hemorrhage, infection of incisional wound,laryngeal edema, etc. Data of follow-up for 7 months to 5 years, showed that excellent local control was achieved in all cases with the exception of one case of recurrence. The one case recurred 4 months after operation and treated with CO2 laser again.@*CONCLUSION@#With careful selection of patients, the CO2 laser combined with pingyangmycin pingyangmycin is a safe and effective treatment for pharyngeal and laryngeal hemangioma with the following advantages: precise location for treating, less bleeding, clear operating field, simple management, low risk of infection, less post-operation reaction, protection of laryngeal and pharyngeal structures and avoidance of tracheostomy.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the voice rest treatment after laryngomicrosurgery in patients with vocal fold polyps .Methods Eighty -five patients with vocal fold polyps were divided into two groups randomly :Group A (48 cases) and Group B ( 37 cases) ,receiving 1 or 2 weeks voice rest postoperation ,respectively .Vocal acoustic analy-sis and fiberlaryngoscopy were performed in all patients before the surgery and 1 ,2 ,3 and 4 weeks after surgery . Results When compared with the preoperative data ,there were no significant differences in jitter ,shimmer and NHR 1 week after surgery in patients of two groups (P>0 .05) .Two weeks after surgery ,all the parameters im-proved significantly in Group B(P<0 .05) ,but only jitter improved in Group A (P<0 .05) .All the data in two groups returned to normal 4 weeks after surgery .Laryngoscopic examination showed varying degrees of vocal fold hyperemia and edema one week after surgery ,which then gradually subsided and gone .At 4 weeks after surgery , the appearance of the operative vocal fold completely returned to normal .Conclusion Patients with vocal fold polyps should be treated with complete voice rest for 2 weeks after surgery ,followed by 2 weeks of relative voice rest .This is beneficial to the voice recovering and the wound healing .

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To establish the rat model of depression and observe its morphological changes and nerve growth factor (NGF) expression in nasal mucosal.@*METHOD@#Thirty SD rats were divided into depression model group and normal controls with 15 rats in each group. The rat depression model were made by application of chronic unforeseeable medium stress stimulating. Behavior change were observed with open box experiment(open field) and humoral consumption-experiments (sucrose consumption), After being sacrificed, the nasal mucosal were taken for HE and NGF immunohistochemical study. The difference of nasal mucosal NGF protein between two groups were examined with medical digital image analysis technology.@*RESULT@#There were no swelling and inflammatory cells infiltrating in nasal mucosal of normal group, but 53% nasal mucosal of depression model were observed such morphological changes. Th NGF immunohistochemical staining were negative in normal group but positive in 53% depression model group. There were significant differences between two groups (P < 0.01).@*CONCLUSION@#Depression rats may appear rhinitis symptoms under long-term stress stimulating. NGF may exert immunoregulatory effects, stimulate the immune cell proliferation and gathering, induce various media release, increase the sensitivity of nerve fibers itself and the producing of neuropeptide, promote the formation of nerve source inflammation and increase the reactivity of nasal mucosa.

ABSTRACT

Plant extracts are kinds of important anticancer drugs.Anticancer drugs research has focused on several important plant extracts such as resveratrol,ricin,epigallocatechin-3-gallate,oridonin,juglone,quercetin,matrine,nordihydroguaiaretic acid.In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that their antitumor mechanisms including induction of apoptosis,cytotoxicity,induced redifferentiation,antiangiogesis,antiinvasion and anti-metastasis.Plant extracts have multi-link and multi-target.Part of them have been used in preclinical studies.In-depth study of the anti-tumor mechanisms of plant extracts on cancer treatment is important,and the full mechanism needs further study.

Objective To investigate the regulatory effects of PTEN-PI3K/AKT pathway on the apoptosis of gastric cancer MKN28 cells and the possible mechanisms.Methods The specific sequence of PTEN was transfected to MKN28 cells by eukaryotic expression vector (transfection group),and then vacant vector (negative control group) and PBS (blank control group) were transfected to the MKN28 cells,respectively.The effects of PTEN-PI3K/AKT pathway on the apoptosis of MKN28 cells and the expressions of PI3K,AKT,Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 were investigated.The growth curve and apoptosis of the MKN28 cells were detected by MTT assay and TUNEL staining,respectively,and the protein expression was detected by the Western blot.MKN28 cells which did not transfected by the PTEN were processed by inhibitor of PI3K (LY294002) (treated group),and MKN28 cells in the control group were processed by PBS.The expressions of apoptosis protein and apoptosis-related protein were detected after inhibition of PI3 K.All data were analyzed using the t test.Results The model of over-expression of PTEN was obtained and transfected into MKN28 cells.The survival of MKN28 cells in the transfection group was significantly inhibited in a time-dependant manner ( r =0.938,P < 0.05 ).The mean apoptotic rate of the transfection rate was 27.86% ± 4.78%,which was significantly higher than 0.01% ± 0.01% of the negative control group ( t =9.527,P < 0.05 ).The protein expression of PI3K in the transfection group was 0.25 ± 0.03,which was significantly lower than 0.93 ± 0.16 of the blank control group and 0.96 ± 0.15 of the negative control group (t =7.235,8.883,P < 0.05 ).The protein expression of P-AKT in the transfection group was 0.21 ± 0.03,which was significantly lower than 0.93 ± 0.13 of the blank control group and 0.91 ± 0.12 of the negative control group (t =9.347,9.802,P < 0.05 ).The expressions of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 of the transfection group were 0.86 ± 0.11 and 0.87 ± 0.12,which were significantly higher than 0.16 ± 0.03 and 0.18 ± 0.04 of the negative control group,and 0.15 ± 0.02 and 0.16 ± 0.03 of the blank control group ( t =10.634,10.999,9.448,9.942,P <0.05).The apoptotic rate of the MKN28 cells of the treated group was 28.60% ± 4.50%,which was significantly higher than 0.12% ± 0.06% of the control group (t =10.961,P < 0.05 ).The protein expression of PI3K and P-AKT of the treated group were 0.18 ± 0.02 and 0.11 ± 0.01,which were significantly lower than 0.93 ± 0.14 and 0.90 ± 0.12 of the control group (t =9.186,11.363,P < 0.05 ).The protein expression of PTEN of the treated group was 1.15 ± 0.15,which was significantly higher than 0.21 ± 0.08 of the control group (t =9.577,P < 0.05 ).The relative expressions of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 of the treated group were 0.86 ± 0.12 and 0.88 ± 0.11,which were significantly higher than 0.25 ± 0.02 and 0.21 ± 0.03 of the control group (t =8.685,10.178,P < 0.05).Conclusions Over-expression of PTEN may enhance the apoptosis of gastric cancer cells through inhibition of PI3K/AKT pathway.Inhibition of PI3K can enhance the expression of PTEN.PI3K and PTEN regulate the apoptosis of gastric cancer cells.

ABSTRACT

In eukaryotes,the cell(s) material exchange has long existed in its proliferation and apoptosis,while the exchange of nucleus and cytoplasm only through the shuttle movement of the nuclear pore complex (NPC). NPC in the nuclear membrane,achieves the protein,RNA and other substances's transport task through the shuttle movement between nucleus and cytoplasm of eukaryotes.Specific nuclear pore proteins regulate specific transport path,and because of this,the transport and regulation through the NPC is highly selective and coordination,so the NPC play an important role in gene expression,cell signaling networks and maintain the environment.Some of them will change the structure properties of membrane,affecting mitosis,and some can be combined with the kinase leading to abnormal biochemical reactions,or combined with other biological factors in angiogenesis,cell migration or apoptosis of cells leading to abnormal changes,and leading to tumorigenesis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To investigate the positive rates of some allergens in different age groups of allergic rhinitis patients, and to analyze the relationship between serum specific immunoglobulin E(sIgE) and total immunoglobulin E(IgE).@*METHOD@#Six hundred and fifty-three patients with allergic rhinitis, tested by AllergyScreen system, were enrolled in our research.@*RESULT@#The positive rate of sIgE in all patients was 85.5%. The positive rate of dust mite was the highest with the result of 76.3%, and the positive rate of feline or dogs hair was the lowest of 20.3%. The statistical significance of different positive rate of some allergens were found in the different age groups. All the patients were divided into two groups, one was younger than 18 years old group, which including 18 years old and another was older than 18 years old group. Except Mx, the positive rate of other allergens existed statistical difference. The level of serum total IgE could not reflect the positive rate of sIgE completely.@*CONCLUSION@#It is an effective and reliable method of the diagnosis of allergic rhinitis to combine the analysis of total serum IgE and sIgE levels with patients clinical manifestations. Different strategies should be employed for the prevention and treatment of allergic rhinitis according to their ages.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To compare the therapeutic effect of radiofrequency ablation and focused ultrasound in treatment of allergic rhinitis which was refractory to medical therapy, and to explore the reliable and safe surgical treatment.@*METHOD@#Eighty-six perennial allergic rhinitis patients were divided randomly into two group. The radiofrequency ablation group included 40 patients and focused ultrasound group included 46 patients. A standard 0 to 10 visual analog scale (VAS) was used to assess the allergic symptoms therapeutic effect before and one year after treatment.@*RESULT@#Allergic symptoms were improved in both two groups one year after treatment. The total VAS score in radiofrequency ablation group decreased from 31.35 +/- 6.16 to 14.16 +/- 4.83 and the total effective power of this group was 87.5% at the twelfth month after surgical. While the total VAS score in focused ultrasound group decreased from 32.86 +/- 5.45 to 21.91 +/- 8.58 and total effective power was 69.6% (all P < 0.01).@*CONCLUSION@#This study had demonstrated that the radiofrequency ablation and focused ultrasound appears to be an effective and safe tool for treating allergic rhinitis which was refractory to medical therapy. Compared to focused ultrasound, the radiofrequency ablation seemed to have a longer time therapeutical effect. While the focused ultrasound was more safe and little trauma, which made it possible to the repeated application.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To evaluate the effects of radiotherapy and surgery on carcinoma of the middle ear.@*METHOD@#A review of five published literatures was conducted according to defined selection criteria by the Review Manager 5.0 statistical software.@*RESULT@#There were no systematic reviews or large-scale RCTs between radiotherapy and symptomatic treatment containing surgery and radiotherapy for carcinoma of the middle ear.@*CONCLUSION@#Radiotherapy and symptomatic treatment for carcinoma of the middle ear have no obvious differences. The radiotherapy is the first choice for the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the middle ear.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To evaluate symptoms and quality of life in children with allergic rhinitis, and to evaluate the correlations among the skin prick tests results, symptoms and quality of life.@*METHOD@#Visual analog scale (VAS) was used to assess the symptoms severity, rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ) was used to assess quality of life, the skin prick tests results were recorded, and statistics analysis was carried out among them.@*RESULT@#(1) There were significant differences among the five aspects of RQLQ (F = 32.03, P < 0.01), nasal symptoms aspect was the most affected aspect of quality of life, moreover, there were significant differences among all the items of RQLQ (F = 7.35, P < 0.01), the scores of nasal blockage, sneezing and rhinorrhea were the highest, there were no significant differences among them. (2) VAS was significantly correlated with RQLQ, moreover, the scores of unable to get to sleep and embarrassed by symptoms were significantly correlated with rhinorrhea VAS scores (r = 0.230, P < 0.05; r = 0.325, P < 0.01), the score of wake up during the night was significantly correlated with nasal itching and sneezing VAS scores (r = 0.385, P < 0.01; r = 0.231, P < 0.05), the score of can't concentrate was significantly correlated with the scores of unable to get to sleep and wake up during the night (r = 0.316, P < 0.01; r = 0.525, P < 0.01), the score of irritable was significantly correlated with the scores of unable to get to sleep (r = 0.243, P < 0.05). (3) The results of the skin prick tests were related with VAS and RQLQ.@*CONCLUSION@#Nasal symptoms severity may significantly correlated with the quality of life. Rhinorrhea, nasal itching and sneezing may be the main factors affecting the quality of sleep, while the quality of sleep may affect non-hay-fever symptoms and emotions, rhinorrhea may be the main factor affecting embarrassed by symptoms. The allergen level was related with the symptoms severity and quality of life.
